Can I insure frequent flyer miles in the cost of my trip?

Frequent flyer miles and similar travel awards, such as hotel or motel awards, cannot be included in the trip cost for your covered trip. The value of air miles and rewards points are not insurable expenses on a travel insurance policy because there is no exact dollar value to associate with the points. However, you can insure any out-of-pocket expenses related to the miles, such as taxes.

Re-banking fees can also be insured. In the event a trip is cancelled or interrupted, the fees incurred for re-depositing the awards back into your account can be reimbursed.

Tin Leg’s Economy, Standard, and Luxury policies, provide 100% reimbursement of prepaid and nonrefundable trip costs if a trip is cancelled or interrupted for one of the policies’ covered reasons. Eligible trip costs include airfare, hotel accommodations, and tours or excursions. Standard Trip Cancellation plans allow the traveler to insure all, some or none of their trip costs.
