Can I cancel my trip if there’s a hurricane?

Tin Leg policies include Hurricane and Weather coverage under the Trip Cancellation benefit. To be eligible for this coverage, you must purchase the policy before the hurricane is named.

Hurricane and Weather coverage can cover you to cancel your trip as long as it is due to a covered reason, such as a delay, damage to your accommodations, or a mandatory evacuation.

The delay of a common carrier, such as an airline or cruise, due to a hurricane is a covered reason to cancel a trip. This benefit requires a minimum delay, which varies in length depending on the policy:

Tin Leg Economy: €”provides coverage after a 48 hour delay
Tin Leg Standard: €”provides coverage after a 24 hour delay
Tin Leg Luxury: €”provides coverage after a 12 hour delay

Hurricane and Weather can also provide coverage to cancel if your accommodations are rendered uninhabitable. In terms of travel insurance, “uninhabitable”€ is typically when a building is unstable, unsafe or seriously damaged, or if the building is without electricity, gas, sewer or water for an extended period of time.

A mandatory evacuation issued at your destination is also a reason to cancel under Hurricane and Weather. However, this coverage does not apply if the traveler still has more than half of their trip left when the evacuation ends.

All Tin Leg policies include Trip Cancellation coverage, which provides 100% reimbursement of non-refundable, prepaid trip costs, as long as the trip is canceled for a covered reason. Tin Leg policies also include Trip Interruption coverage, which provides reimbursement for the unused, non-refundable portion of a trip, as well as transportation home, in the event that a trip is ended early for a covered reason. Both the Tin Leg Economy and Standard policies include 100% reimbursement, while the Tin Leg Luxury policy includes 150% reimbursement.
